So, with half the scheduled events behind us, I took this prime opportunity while Susan and Michael were here, to skip town. With in-home babysitters and no kid event planned for 4 days, there was no doubt I was on my way out. I am currently studying under a wise herbalist and woman of the wild, Kiva Rose. She lives on an 80-acre wilderness sanctuary nestled in the Gila Wilderness (also lovingly called the Aldo Leopold Wilderness). The Gila was the first in New Mexico and in in the country to become a protected national forest. And if you ever get the chance to visit, you’ll instantly know why. I took this retreat time to further my studentship with Anima. It was absolutely amazing. I spent 4 days in a blissful lodge to myself at the Frisco River’s edge below ancient Mogollon people spiritual sites and stunning geological formations. We ventured up hillsides and washes in search of wild herbs to harvest and wild foods to incorporate into that evening’s meal. I spent many an hour just reading, meditating, doing YOGA, dipping in the river and just reconnecting to the land and my wild self. I nourished my body with lovingly home-cooked wild food meals prepared by Loba. I listened to owls hoot, elk cross rivers, mice play guitar (not joking, but a long story). I encountered a family of javelina, and scoped the sandy river’s edge for animal tracks each morning.

I returned to civilization a changed woman, in that I more deeply know myself and I more intensely feel the pain of the impacts of today’s society on all of our wild selves and this beautiful planet that fights so hard to sustain us. I hope to complete my course with Anima to come into my whole true self, with the strength and the knowledge to finally re-integrate into this world as my own true nature for the good of the whole. This life is a journey, and this next year will certainly be a big one for me. I look forward to the growth, the challenges, the pain, the bliss, the love, the frustration, the beauty, the dark, the mystery, the answers, the unfolding. And I look forward to sharing it with you.
